Holy Apostles Orthodox Church (Sandpoint, Idaho) carries out its works of mercy in three main directions:
1. Local Service through Subdeacons and Deacons
The parish deliberately revives the early-church model of Acts 6. Subdeacons and deacons are the primary hands-on charity messenger (and often) workers:
– Food pantry and emergency food bags
– Firewood cutting and delivery in winter
– Rent and utility assistance
– Transportation to medical appointments
– Visiting the sick and elderly at home
All local aid is coordinated and usually delivered personally by readers, subdeacons and deacons.
2. Support for a Sister Parish in Serbia
The parish is establishing through Bishop Maxim direct relationships with parishes in both Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Focus: elderly widows and poor families in villages with harsh living conditions.
Annual or monthly support can covers:
– Firewood and coal
– Basic medicines
– Roof and chimney repairs
– Food.
Funds go parish-to-parish with essentially zero overhead.
3. Known Families in the Central African Republic
Through Fr. Laurent’s long-standing ties, the parish wishes to support specific Orthodox families in Bangui:
– School fees for children
– Medical care and malaria treatment
– Food assistance during crises
– Small income-generating projects (sewing machines, etc.)
